Makita has released a cordless tower light, the ML014G, that takes batteries from either of its platforms — 40V max XGT or 18V LXT. For anyone running both systems on the same site, that dual compatibility is the notable part: site lighting is usually the tool that strands a spare pack on the wrong platform.

The mast extends to 8ft and folds down for transport. Three heads rotate through 180°, and Makita quotes up to 15,000 lumens at full output, with a dial giving continuous adjustment from 1,100 lumens upward rather than fixed steps. On the lowest setting the company says the light runs up to 28 hours on a 40V max XGT 8.0Ah battery, sold separately along with the charger.

The rest is logistics, which for site lighting is most of the job: a lockable battery compartment, carrying handles and a shoulder strap. Makita makes a point of the LEDs running cooler than the halogen fittings this class of light replaced — an argument about burns and heat in enclosed spaces rather than about brightness.

Availability

No price and no on-sale date were given. The announcement was issued on 4 August from La Mirada, California, for the United States market, and says nothing about availability elsewhere.

Where it sits

Makita keeps XGT and LXT deliberately apart — 40V and 18V packs do not interchange across tools — so a light that accepts both is an exception rather than a sign of the platforms converging. Site lighting is not a category in our catalogue, and the ML014G is not in it.
